WTF is Generative AI

Definition of Generative AI

Generative AI is a subset of artificial intelligence that leverages machine learning techniques to generate new content. This could be anything from text to images, music, and even video. The key idea behind generative AI is that it learns patterns from a set of input data and then uses these patterns to create new, original content that is similar but not identical to the input data.

Types of Generative AI Models

There are several types of generative AI models, each with its own unique capabilities:

  • DALL-E: This is a model developed by OpenAI that generates images from textual descriptions. For example, if you give DALL-E the prompt "an armchair in the shape of an avocado," it will generate an image that fits that description.

  • Stable Diffusion: This is a type of generative model that uses a process called diffusion to generate new content. The model starts with a random piece of content and gradually refines it over time to match a specific target distribution. This process is called diffusion because it's similar to the way particles diffuse in a liquid or gas.

  • Midjourney: This is a model that generates images by transitioning smoothly from one image to another. It's called "Midjourney" because it focuses on the journey or transition between images, rather than the final result.
